What is Therapy and How Can it Help?

Psychotherapy or counseling can be beneficial if you are experiencing emotional difficulties, life challenges or transitions, and health concerns.

Therapy helps improve symptoms of many emotional and mental health challenges.  Medication may also halp reduce some symptoms you may experience when struggling emotionally. However, therapy functions to empower you with powerful and effective skills to help you identify, address, process, and heal emotional wounds you may be experiencing or help you manage getting through life's challenges. These skills will endure after therapy, and your challenges may continue to improve as you implement these new coping skills and processes in your life.

You are not alone.

Mental and emotional challenges are common across the human experience spectrum. The Anxiety & Depression Association of America data reveals anxiety is the most common mental health challenge in America affecting nearly 20% of the population, and depression is the leading cause of disabilities in ages 15-43, with approximately 7% of the population suffering with depression.

As you may have noticed, many athletes and celebrities are revealing their emotional and mental health challenges and sharing their courage to seek help in a public manner.

If left untreated mental health issues may become worse and negatively impact your life in significant ways leading to:

  • Work or school performance or attendance issues
  • Personal relationships or parenting challenges
  • Increased health risks
  • Possible hospitalization
  • and even suicide ideation or intention

When Should I Consider Getting Help?

The American Psychological Association suggests you may want to consider therapy as an option when something is emotionally distressing and interfering with your life, or perhaps within these guidelines:

  • You spend one hour or more thinking about or coping with your issue daily
  • The issue is causing you embarrassment or inhibiting social interaction
  • Your quality of life is diminished
  • Relationships, work, or school are negatively impacted by the issue

The following specifics may help guide you in your decsion to seek help. If you are experiencing any of the following, therapy can help:

  1. Feeling overwhelmed. This may lead to significant stress and health issues.
  2. Often feeling fatigued and/or sleeping many hours per day.  This may signify depression.
  3. Experiencing significant anger or resentment. While anger is a normal response at times, if you're feeling signifcant and persistent anger and resentment, and it feels uncontrollable and misappropriated, this may indicate you need help managing and expressing the anger in a healthy manner.
  4. Phobias. You may experience a phobia that is causing you signficant distress, panic, panic attacks, or limiting your social engagement.
  5. Anxiety, rumination, or intrusive thoughts. Anxiety may be beneficial at times for our safety and is a normal repsonse to some of life's challenges. However, if your worry is causing distress, panic attacks, or is consuming your days, therapy is an effective way to help you mangage your anxiety rather than the anxiety managing or overwhelming your daily life.
  6. Loss of interest in life or activies you once enjoyed. This may be related to  depression or anxiety.
  7. Feeling hopeless.  If you feel hopeless it may be depression or possibly grief. Feeling hopeless after a loss and during grieving is not unusual. However, if hopelessness is feels persistent or is interfering with your daily life therapy can be beneficial.
  8. Trauma. You've experienced a trauma, short or long-term, and are struggling to handle your emotional response, or the trauma you've experienced is negatively impacting your life and relationships.
